From spreadsheets to decisions:
how a platform helped reach 200k citizens in need

As a Senior UX designer at the Portuguese Tax Authority, I built a platform to manage decisions on financial support for citizens. As a result, more than 200k citizens-in-need were identified more easily and managers were able to present their decisions more effectively.

The process:
End-to-end design

To more easily identify citizens-in-need, I created the end to end application for government employees. I designed three flows to match information from different databases: the list of users, details and another one with the cross-checked information.

I also designed the dashboard for decision-makers. All information about the evolution of support over the years, the total number of citizens helped, the total amount paid in euros during the year among others.

I ensured the handoff and support for the development team. I discussed and found solutions with the development team for components such as tables or history panels. The team decided to use Prime React to speed up components implementation.

Before that, the users received the data every month from different departments in some spreadsheets. They spent much time and took more risks to cross-check the data.

The outcome:
Real-world impact

The application was tested by users, who gave excellent feedback. Some gaps were detected and requests for new features were added to the backlog. The application lived in three months. In this year, the Portuguese Government sent money correctly and more quickly to more than 200k citizens in need.

The managers share accurate information with higher levels and were able to present their decisions more effectively to the media. The government employee saved time and have more accurate data using the application.
