Statistics Portal: Sharing Public Data for All Citizens
The Statistics Portal is a web application developed for the Tax and Customs department of the Portuguese Government to make real-time official data accessible to citizens and businesses. The project aims to promote transparency, enhance decision-making, and improve public understanding of taxes. As a UX Designer, my role encompasses creating personas, designing use cases, and developing prototypes refined through stakeholder workshops and usability testing.
With the exponential growth of global data, governments face challenges in listening to, analyzing, and sharing this information effectively. In Portugal, the need for a centralized platform to provide citizens and businesses with real-time data on taxes and city administration became evident. The Tax and Customs department recognized this gap and initiated the development of the Statistics Portal. The goal was to consolidate data into a single platform to promote transparency, streamline decision-making, and empower citizens with a clearer understanding of tax policies.
The project began with two workshops involving key stakeholders to understand the diverse needs of users, from citizens to government officials. Insights gained during these sessions guided the creation of personas and use cases that reflect real-world data interaction scenarios. Key findings revealed the importance of consolidating data in a user-friendly manner to enable real-time analysis and decision-making. The initial design proposals, including wireframes and prototypes, were informed by these insights and approved by the client. The next phase involves further workshop sessions with citizens and officials to refine ideas, ensuring the platform meets the needs of all users.
The design process focuses on creating an intuitive and accessible platform that simplifies data interaction for diverse user groups. Wireframes and prototypes were developed based on stakeholder inputs and validated through collaborative design sessions. The portal incorporates real-time data visualization tools to assist decision-making and includes features aimed at enhancing public understanding of taxes. The Service Ownership approach ensures sustainable development and long-term usability. Future steps include conducting usability tests with a broad audience to refine the prototypes further and ensure a seamless user experience.
